The beam angle may be the angle of which light is directed from your lamp. So a little angle of 20 degrees will be befitting an area light, focusing light on only one small area. If you want more general lighting, spreading light over the whole room, a larger angle of perhaps 90 degrees will be preferred. In most domestic lighting situations beam angles of 30-45 degrees are sufficient to light an area comfortably.
